I came to DC from Miami, FL to make American public health more robust and eliminate disparities in delivery of care.
I want to get involved with policymaking and analysis so that every American can one day be secure in the provision of basic healthcare, especially when it comes to preventative measures. Think tanks, medical corporations, research institutes, and congress are all on the board, as well as startups.
I spent half a decade as a researcher at the University of Miami, and now I am turning those skills into meaningful change for every citizen. Other than that, I enjoy writing in my spare time or, failing that, reading nonfiction, especially futurism and noir.
My Story
Growing up with a mentally disabled sibling, I have become well acquainted with the ineffectiveness of American public health. Despite living in an affluent suburb with multiple care facilities, there was very little assistance afforded to my parents to care for my sister.
Later, when I first started my research career, I lived in Overtown—the poorest and most malnourished neighborhood in Miami. It struck me as odd that just a few blocks away, the University of Miami and Jackson Memorial Hospitals each treated hundreds of patients a day and could handle many more, yet here was an underserved population right in downtown Miami.
I was compelled to ask, “Why was medicine so inaccessible to some people, and how could I work to advance evidence based public health policy to combat inequality?” Since then, I have been a student of public health and have developed a multifaceted approach to research, analysis, and policy recommendation.
Public health policy is at a critical juncture in the United States; the legacy of the ACA, the future of Medicaid and Medicare, and the livelihoods of physicians are all of immediate concern. Too many people in the United States die from preventable disease every year, and the patchwork system of healthcare delivery costs billions of unnecessary dollars. Right now, we need more than ever to have well-informed, rational, cost effective healthcare policies in place.
